The Orphans and vulnerable children analysis report has revealed that Anambra state has over 5.9 million vulnerable children resulting from poverty and HIV,

This is coming as the United Agency for International Development (USAID) recently awarded Widows and Orphans Empowerment Organisation (WEWE) a grant to implement the local Partners for orphans and Vulnerable Children (LOPIN) project in Anambra and Imo States.
This project, according to USAID Division Lead, Community Programs Office of HIV/AIDS, Joanna Nwosu, is aimed at improving the quality of the lives of  340, 000 vulnerable children in 68,000 vulnerable households in Anambra and Imo states in five years.
The WEWE programme is to make Anambra and Imo the best place for children to grow up in Nigeria, even as the WEWE-LOPIN Project will provide education, nutrition and food security, shelter and care, health care,  psychosocial support to beneficiaries within the five years as 408 communities in 24 Local government Areas found in Imo and Anambra have been enlisted for intervention.
While introducing WEWE LOPIN project at Women Development Centre, Awka, Anambra State before the staff of the State Ministry of women and Affairs and Social Development and other Local partners, the Chief of Party (COP), WEWE-LOPIN, Josephine Ogazi (PHD) stated that the  purpose of the LOPIN project is to support Local Nigerian Civil society partners to improve the accessibility and quality of services for children orphaned and made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS in Nigeria through improvement of systems and structures at communities, local government authorities and states to provide quality care and support for vulnerable households.
She also added that the programme will mobilise resources from the private sector  for care and support of vulnerable children.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Victoria Mgbemena welcomed the team and informed that the wife of the State Governor, Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano, has in the past provided psycho social support, food and nutrition to over 5,520 vulnerable children across the 184 communities in Anambra State.
In his office, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joe Akabuike appreciated USAID team for selecting Anambra State as one of the eastern states to implement its local partners for orphans and vulnerable children (LOPIN)  project in Nigeria.
Dr. Akabuike also congratulated WEWE as one of the Local partners that won the LOPIN project and assured that the State under Governor Willie Obiano’s watch, will give the partners necessary cooperation to achieve its objectives.
