Monarch wants FRSC to take stringent measures against over-speeding




The Obi-of-Onitsha, Igwe Alfred  Achebe, yesterday urged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to put more stringent measures to check over-speeding and reckless driving on roads nationwide.


www.odogwublog.com reports that Achebe made the call while he received the new FRSC Sector Commander in Anambra, Mr Sunday Ajayi, paid him a courtesy call in his Onitsha palace.
  
Obi Achebe said, ``I would want to commend you for the wonderful job you are doing in Anambra especially in Onitsha and the Bridge-Head axis on daily basis.

``I would also thank you for being thoughtful to bring out the speed limiting device programme; however, I would like the FRSC to put more measures on speed control in our roads even beyond your present programme.

``I believe that we can achieve lower accident and death rate on our roads by working to make sure that recklessness that comes due to speeding is effectively checked,’’ he advised.

 ``Motor park unions must certify the medical and vehicle drivability of their union members; while your safety campaign messages should be mounted in the motor parks always if possible 24 hours each day.

``You can team up with motor park unions to place safety messages within minutes intervals after a running nollywood movie on their television screens to keep the attention of the road users and drivers cue to safety on the road always,’’ he said.


He described a driver over-speeding on the road like someone heading to self-suicide; adding when the negative happen in the over-speeding, the devastation would be felt by love ones, family and community members of the victims.

He urged the corps to take the issue of subjecting commercial motorists who come for re-issuance of licenses through medical test and refresher driving course seriously in order to check drivers’ fitness to continue to serve the public.

Achebe called on parents to take responsibility of the vehicle usage of young-adults living under them by making sure they pass through formal driving schools and issued with driving license before they take to the road.

The Obi-of-Onitsha, however, assured the FRSC of the support and assistance of Onitsha council of chiefs and Onitsha people in the discharge of their duties.

Earlier, Ajayi said that he came to seek the royal blessing as well as the co-operation of Onitsha people to road safety issues in Anambra especially in Onitsha.

Ajayi, who handled the monarch a Highway Code booklet on behalf of FRSC Corps Marshal, Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, said that the corps would always seek his fatherly advice on issues concerning road safety.
