The Corp
Marshal of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, has revealed
that 2015 would be a year of massive enforcement campaign by the corps
nationwide, noting that the corps would be strict in enforcing the use of speed
limiters on commercial vehicles as well as over loading of goods and passengers
in 2015.
Oyeyemi stated this in Onitsha, Anambra state while inspecting traffic flow between Onitsha in Anambra State and Asaba in Delta end of the Niger Bridge.
According to him,``If we continue on public education and enlightenment without any enforcement, it would be seem as if we are here for entertainment after 27 years,’’
``We are set for the year and the officers and men had been clearly briefed, kitted and inspired for the task ahead.
``As I am biting on the road, I would still be going to the churches and mosques to appeal to motorists,’’ he said.
The corps marshal said that the corps was not after fines but for people to change their driving and road use habits for the better.
``This year, we shall set-up more mobile courts; which I had appealed to the states Chief Judges and they have agreed to set-up more traffic mobile courts in the 36 states and the FCT.
``And when we get you, we would not only aim on the fine but you going to court and if possible paying the fine and still go to jail or having only option of jail,’’ he said.
He also noted that there had been about 14 per cent reduction in road crashes in 2014 compared to 2013 yuletide period; adding that this was due to improved planning and greater service delivery on the part of the corps special and regular marshals.
The corps marshal said that 2014 had been a year of huge successes for the corps; adding: ``We must thank our stakeholders, collaborators, sister security agencies and various state governments for assisting us to make this reduction possible.
``The Federal Government and our supervising ministry, the ministry of work, had contributed greatly by ensuring that almost all the roads in the country are in good condition.
``While those under construction or re-construction had been made motorable during this yuletide season.
``For the logistics we got from the World Bank, which we deployed very effectively, we thank the World Bank for a wonderful and far-reaching assistance,’’ he said.
