Anambra Traditional Rulers Now To Collect Taxes For Govt



Traditional rulers in Anambra State, are now to be collecting taxes for the state government .
They offered to assist the state government boost its internally generated revenue (IGR), by collection of personal income tax from their subjects and payment of same into the state treasury.
The traditional rulers who made the proposal at the end of a three-day workshop in Awka, the state capital, also urged the state government to introduce an annual cultural heritage festival to be held during the Christmas season to showcase the rich cultural potentials of the state.
The traditional ruler of Iseke kingdom, Ihiala local government area of the state, His Royal Majesty Emmanuel Nnabuife, told newsmen at the end of the workshop that the policy was necessary in view of the declining allocation from the federation account to states, which according to him has made it necessary for states to shore up their IGR, so as to meet the demands of governance.
The traditional rulers stated that because they know every taxable adult in their respective domains, it would be difficult for any native to evade payment of his personal income tax.
They also noted with satisfaction the achievements recorded so far by the state. Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, particularly in the area of security, adding that the development agenda of the government which includes agriculture, trade and commerce, industrialization, oil and gas, would if fully implemented make Anambra a model state for other states in the country to emulate.
