Obiano vows to make Awka befitting state capital

Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, has set up an eight-man adhoc committee to review the Awka Capital Development Manual intended to give the state a world-class befitting state capital.
Chairman of  Awka Capital Development Authority, Chika Egwuatu announced this yesterday, during a courtesy call on stakeholders within the capital territory.

Egwuatu, who visited the Chairman of Awka South Local Government, Azubike Iloh, and the traditional rulers of Awka, Amawbia and Okpuno, with other board members, on behalf of the Managing Director, Mike Okonkwo said the Governor Obiano administration was poised to change the face of the Awka capital territory for good despite challenges.
He stated that 23 years after the creation of Anambra State, only the present administration had shown serious commitment towards the development of the state capital according to international specifications.
He said members of the board inaugurated on May 14, 2014, after careful planning, deemed it fit to identify with the relevant stakeholders and form synergy for optimum delivery of projects.
Also speaking, the Secretary of the Board and Senior Special Assistant to the governor on Housing and Urban Development, Willie Okafor, said the development plan for Awka capital territory has been developed into hard and soft copy prototypes, with visuals, while the aerial topography of Awka has been taken, toward making Anambra a smart city with satellite towns that will decongest the state capital.
The board members also assured that there would be no undue victimisation when they commence full operations, saying that genuine land owners would get compensated if their property are affected in the course of work.
Responding, the traditional ruler of Awka Kingdom, Obi Gibson Nwosu, pledged support to the board in their assigned duties. He lamented that Awka was shrinking everyday because of the activities of land speculators and expressed hope that with the calibre of people in the board, the state was set for another glorious era.
The Awka South Council Chairman, Hon. Azubike Iloh also commended Gov. Obiano for his boldness to tackle the haphazard development pace of Awka and also assured that the council will key into the project and give its maximum support.
