An Onitsha based medical
practitioner, Dr Alfred Nwakor has charged curriculum formulators in the
country’s education system to include the study of culture in Nigerian
secondary schools if the youths must turn patriotic to their fatherland.
He made the call yesterday at St.
Charles College, Onitsha during the feast of St. Charles Borromeo held in the
college premises.
Dr. Nwakor who is the sponsor of
Green House of the college stated that it had become imperative for Nigerian
students to know about the culture of their people as it was an identity which
the people are known for.
He thanked the school management and
the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha for setting aside a day to display the
culture of Igbo race while commemorating the feast of the saint in whose name
the college was named.
Earlier in his speech the principal
and manager of the schools Rv. Fr. Vitus Mbamalu remarked that the day was set
aside to commemorate St. Charles Borromeo in whose memory the college was
named, adding that the institution has a long history of success even while as
a Teachers’ Training College and has produced prominent men in the society.
Fr. Mbamalu echoed the need for
parents and guardians to support the school in sustaining the glory which it
has attained since inception.
He, however, charged the students to
remain hard-working and steadfast in their quest for academic excellence.
Highpoints of the occasion were the
display of various cultural activities by students of the college who trooped
out in their white cultural attire with red cap to match.
While parents, guardians and
relations watched their wards reactivate the cultural heritage of the people.
