There was jubilation yesterday in Onitsha
as the Anambra state Government commissioned the new ultramodern polythene and
allied market built by traders of polythene and plastic materials dealers of
Madueke Street, Onitsha even as the traders were given December 1st,
2014 deadline to pack in reports Odogwu Blog.
Commissioning the market located at
Ikenga, Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Governor Willie
Obiano said he was highly elated at the effort of the traders in completing the
market which he said was aimed at decongesting Onitsha market.
Obiano represented by the state
Commissioner for Commerce and Industries, Mr. Ifeatu Onejeme noted that government would always encourage
traders on completing their new business site by providing social amenities
such as: security, streetlight and other facilities to make such market
attractive to traders and their customers.
Obiano however, expressed anger over
the conversion of toilet facilities to shops as experienced in some markets
across the state.
He warned traders of Madueke Street
Polythene and Allied Dealers Association who built the market to pack into
their new site on or before December 1st as government would do
everything within its power to enforce the law banning street trading.
Obiano further reminded traders of
the need to embrace electronic trading which according to him is widely used by
traders for safe and quick transaction of their businesses.
In his remarks, President-General of
Anambra Markets Traders Association (AMATAS), Chief Okwudili Ezenwankwo
expressed delight with the leadership of the market union in completing the
site and advised all the traders of the polythene and allied dealers presently
doing business at Madueke Street, Onitsha were expected to join hands in
developing the new market.
In their separate speeches, the Chairman of Polythene and Allied Dealer Association, Chief Matthias Nwokoye and a major stakeholder, Chief Chukwudi Nwokediuko both pleaded with the state government to build the access road that leads to the market as it was almost impassable to motorists, adding that an electricity transformer was also a priority to enable traders power their machines with electricity.
Chief Ezenwankwo told the traders
that as landlords they were naturally compelled to do everything possible to
protect the market as their property by relocating to its new site in order to
make the site boom with business.
Highpoint of the official
commissioning of the new market which was earlier preceded by a mass officiated
by Rev. Fr. Dr. Ignatius Onwuatuegwu.
