The first Inaugural Lecture Series of the Anambra State University now Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Uli has ended with a call for human beings to give considerations to insects and stop the indiscriminate killing of insects even as he added that insects are food and protein contents for human consumption than merely pests reports odogwuemekaodogwu.blogspot.com.
The maiden lecture series with the topic ”INSECTS AND MAN: Species Diversity and Interactions" was delivered by a former Vice Chancellor Anambra state University Uli and now the Dean, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Professor Chukwunenye Anene, professor of Entomology and Insect Pest Management.
Prof Anene in his lecture noted that the topic of the inaugural lecture is chosen to give an accurate account of what the insects are and how they interact with man, his crops and animals.
He added that insects are the only animals giving
man a real battle for supremacy and have been on earth for about 360 million
years and have developed special adaptations to live under many environmental
conditions.
"The plan for this lecture is to present a panorama of insect interaction with man, his crops and animals, giving you as my mentor Prof Eluwa would say"the good, the bad and the ugly".

So that at the end of the lecture, you will be in
position to decide whether the insects are friends, foes or both".
The professor, who argued that insects were a high source of protein, said humans should stop the indiscriminate killing of insects as they play vital role in the existence of man.
“Insects should no longer be called pests but treated fairly as food substances and alternative source of protein,” he said.
Anene also called on health workers not to subdue insects through their in-door and out-door residual spraying as well as other unhealthy environmental practices.
Prof Anene further explained that in other for man to produce more effective food for himself, he must reduce the destruction caused by insects and disease especially, because man's most serious competitor for food are the insects.
Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Fidelis Okafor, had earlier said that the essence of the inaugural lecture was intended to give Prof Anene the opportunity to expose findings of a research he conducted earlier.
His words:"we in this University, because of history and circumstances were not able to do this at time it should have taken place but they say it is never too late and that's what we are beginning today. It is not compulsory but it is desirable. We are happy that this is happening.
He said that the topic of the lecture x-rayed the relationship between insect and man, “We examined whether insects are friendly or not to mankind but we gave a verdict that they are friendly.
Okafor further commended the ceremonial committee led by Prof Chris Uzuegbunam, Dean Faculty of Agriculture on making the event a success, "that group is a group one can call anytime, any day for any function and you get the best result, he said.
The event was graced by distinguished scholars, government functionaries, eminent personalities and well-meaning Nigerians from all walks of life.
