He noted that the Navy had a continuous routine surveillance of the waterways in the Onitsha axis; while it was currently taken control of water-craft (boats) moving on the River Niger as well as those having anything to do close to the River Niger Bridge.

``We have also set-up an observation tower with binocular manned 24 hours to monitor movement on the River Niger as well as keeping a close eye on the Niger Bridge.

``As you know, one of our primary duties here is to give protection to the Niger Bridge as well as the on-going 2nd Niger Bridge project.

``While our presence and advanced weapons are great deterrent that had scared all illegal oil bunkerers, who use to have a swell time carrying out their nefarious activities before we came over to Onitsha,’’ he said.

Oamen said that the navy was in Onitsha for good and would bring international exposure to Onitsha as well as development that go with it.

The naval commanding officer said that naval headquarters had completed a blue-print for its permanent site in Odekpe community near Onitsha; adding that the first stage of its implementation would be the perimeter fencing of the permanent site.

``While the navy was highly grateful over the state government construction of road to the entrance to the permanent site as well as its promise to provide the outpost with a gun-boat,’’ he said.

Oamen also noted that the naval was enjoying a robust relationship with the immediate host communities Odepke; while the law-abiding citizens of the community have a mutual respective relationship with the naval now.
