Awka Youths Protest Alleged Illegal Sale Of Their Land

               
Youths of Ishiagu, a village in Awka, the Anambra State capital, yesterday took to the streets to protest alleged illegal sale of their land by some prominent people in the area without approval.

According to the youths, the land, located along the Federal High Court Road Awka, was given to them by the immediate past administration in 2013.


Some of the placards displayed by the protesting youths read: “We will not succumb to intimidation by anyone”, “Our land is not for sale”, “They are deceivers: Ishiagu say no to 419” and “Caveat Emptor; buyer beware”, among others.

Speaking to journalists, their leader, Mr. Sunday Igwebuike, urged the state government to save them from imminent accommodation crisis, saying that part of the agreement between the villagers and the state government was that the said land would not be sold when released to them.
“We are here to show our annoyance concerning the land which the government released to our village some time last year,” Igwebuike said, adding:
“We applied for it because we do not have a place to stay. When government released the land, some people grouped themselves and went ahead to sell it without recourse to the original owners.
“The buyers are already erecting fences on it but we advised the buyers to go for refund as the land is not for sale and as law abiding citizens, we are calling on the state government to come to our aid.”
Igwebuike stressed that they decided to protest openly to enable the world know their plights as they were being intimidated by the group selling the land.
