The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU),
Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka branch has rejected intoto the process that
produced the new Vice Chancellor of the institution, alleging that the
committee charged with the responsibility to produce the next Vice Chancellor
jettisoned laid down guidelines by the Federal Ministry of Education and called
for reversal of the exercise.
The ASUU, NAU Chairperson, Professor Ike Odimegwu stated this in Awka yesterday while addressing journalists on the stalemate. He alleged that as soon as the Shortlist Committee started its work , the fair play promise started dying.
He also alleged that the Council Chairman himself interrupted the proceedings of the Committee several times introducing extraneous issues and criteria, tel-guiding the Committee, ordering mark and score adjustment and generally rendering the Shortlist report grossly compromised.
Meanwhile, one of the contestants to the VC position, Professor Emeka Ezeonu has described the entire process as a charade. Ezeonu, a Professor in Applied Biochemistry disclosed his displeasure at the weekend in Awka during a symposium and merit awards organized by the UNIZIK Alumni Association, Awka branch.
He said that the process that produced the new VC was characterized by inconsistencies and subjected candidates to heavy spending which he said would lead them to indebtedness. " If you come to the process itself, it is a mess from my own perception.
" You cannot keep on changing the goalpost in the middle of the match every day. It is very unfortunate that politicians have been allowed to come and run over the university. The process is not fair enough. I may challenge it," the Prof said.
