Anambra
State has joined the rest of the world in celebrating the world malaria day
with a call on the citizens to explore the use of synthetic medication in
treatment of malaria rather than resort to the use of local herbs and
other orthodox medication.
The theme of this year’s world malaria day is, “invest in the future, defeat malaria”.
The Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joe Chukwudi Akabuike in a press briefing, explained that malaria is the, most significant health problem in Nigeria adding that it accounts for 25 percent of under 5 mortality, 30 percent childhood mortality and 11 percent maternal mortality.
The commissioner further disclosed that Anambra state Government under the watch of Gov. Willie Obiano with the support from world bank and Federal Ministry of Health has instituted several measures which according to him include: distribution of long lasting insecticidal net to families, indoor residential spraying and support in reduction of mosquitoes breeding sites as well as the use of intermittent preventive therapy.
Dr. Joe who categorically stated that malaria is caused by a parasite called the plasmodium, maintained that that the objective of the global malaria day is to promote the use of preventive measures against malaria and as well sensitise people on the cause and appropriate case management for malaria.
“Not only that, other objectives include, to inform the general public on the use of RDT in the prompt diagnosis of malaria as an alternative to microscopy and to inform our people about the malaria scourge and the disease burden.
The commissioner who was flanked by the State Technical malaria Manager, SunMap, Anambra State, Busola Oyeyemi, the Project Manager, State Malaria Elimination Booster Project, Dr. Ezeaku Obiora and the Director Planning, Research and statistics, Ministry of Health, Mr. Azuka Okeke also said that Anambra has declared war on environment to reduce the mosquitoes attack which causes malaria.
