The Onitsha zone of the Anambra
State Local government election tribunal presided over by Barrister Obi Anizoba
has nullified the election of the Executive chairman of Ogbaru Local Government
Chief Victor Agolue.
Agolue was the candidate of All
Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and ordered Anambra State Independent
Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) to conduct a fresh poll in the area.
Anizoba was ruling today on a
Petition brought by Chief Zeribe Ezeanuna , the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
candidate for Ogbaru Local Government Area in the last Anambra State Local
Government election held on 11th January this year.
The tribunal after reviewing the evidence
of the petitioner Chief Zeribe Ezeanuna and the submission of his lead Counsel
Barrister Chidebere Ezems as well as that of respondent Chief Victor
Agolue of (APGA) and his lead Counsel Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN) held that the
election was marred with irregularities and cancelled the election.
He ordered ANSIEC to immediately
conduct a fresh election in the Local Government for the Chairmanship seat.
Reacting immediately after the
ruling at the court premises, the lead Counsel to the petitioner, Barrister
Chidiebere Ezems applauded the tribunal for its painstaking effort in ensuring
that justice was delivered.
He noted that the judgment is an
indication that there is still hope for the common man in Nigeria through the
judiciary.
Also speaking, Chief Zeribe Ezeanuna
the PDP candidate for Ogbaru Local Government Area in the election and the
petitioner, described the judgment as clear and apt and explain that it is an
indication that judiciary still remains the hope of common Nigerians who felt
aggrieved. He stated that his party is ready to win the election in the Local
Government whenever it is conducted.
The APGA candidates and their
counsels were not in court to react to the judgment after the court
session.
