Governor Peter Obi has presented a cheque of five hundred
million naira to Odumegwu-Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka for Diagnostic
equipment supplied to upgrade the hospital.
Governor Obi who presented the cheque while commissioning the
equipment, also presented three thirty two seater buses, one each for the
college of Medicine, School of Nursing and School of Midwifery.
The equipment which has one year maintenance warranty include
scanning machines, mammography, ultra sound machines, Digital X-ray and
Anesthetic machines, among others.
Governor Obi said the equipment would reduce the burden of people
travelling abroad for healthcare services while the vehicles would enhance
activities of students in the hospital.
The Governor expressed dissatisfaction with the slow pace of work
on the going hostel project for the medical students
but assured that measures have been put in place to accelerate
work, while work would also commence in earnest on the school of nursing hostel
project.
The Commissioner for Health Dr. Lawrence Ikeakor said Governor’s
Intervention had repositioned the Teaching Hospital and its institutions as
well as provided a conducive environment for academic excellencies as well
as logistics to enable the institutions scale various accreditations.
Dr. Ikeakor noted that equipment would improve service delivery in
the Hospital and charged the students to strive to acquire the requisite
knowledge and skill to distinguish themselves.
The Chief Medical Officer of the Hospital, Dr. Ifeanyi Ezeobi
thanked Governor Obi for his sustained efforts to upgrade the Teaching Hospital
to World Class standard that would meet the health needs of the people.
Dr. Ezeobi observed that the quality of the equipment would
provide the desired result as the hospital had standard Radiography Department.
Responding, the President, Medical Students Association, Mr.
Kenneth Nwokolo said the Governor hadvrestored their hope by building one of
the best Teaching Hospitals in the country.
Also speaking, a Medical
Student, Mr. Collins Chukwu assured the Governor that they would
reciprocate his kind gesture through hard work and expressed the hope that the
incoming administration would follows his foothsteps.
