The appointment of three first principal officers by the new
governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, has elicited public criticism.
Obiano had on Tuesday reappointed Oseleka Obaze as the Secretary
to the State Government (SSG).
Other appointments made by the new governor were that of the Chief
of Staff, Professor Joseph Ikechukwu Asike (a Professor in Howard University)
and Mr. Willie Nwokoye (a banker) as principal secretary.
The appointees were sworn in immediately by Solicitor-General of
the State Mrs. Tina Emekakwelu. But most people picked-hole with the
appointment, describing it as lopsided.
Akpata Okeke, a lawyer argues thus: “this is complete
disappointment. I least expected Obiano to start this way. Everybody knows that
Obiano is a product of equity as enunciated by our former Governor, Peter Obi.
“But look at what he has just done. The Governor is from Anambra
North, the Speaker of House of Assembly, Mrs. Chinwe Nwebili is from Ogbaru
Anambra North and yet, he appointed SSG from Anambra North.
“This is really a dangerous precedent began too early in the day.
Okeke further argued that “even the Professor he brought
from Howard University and appointed as Chief of Staff, what he knows about
Anambra State? Political appointments should reflect the spirit and heart beat
of the people. How can you bring a stranger and make him a landlord”. Akpata
quipped.
