The 2014 Armed Forces and
Remembrance Day Celebration and Emblem Appeal Week has been concluded with
wreath laying and parade ceremonies at the Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka.
The weeklong
celebration started with the launching of Emblem while Jumat prayers and church
services were held in various mosque and churches across the country.
The wreath laying exercise
started with prayers by a Priest and an Imam while Governor Peter Obi kick
started the wreath laying followed by his Deputy, Mr Emeka Sibeudu.
Others who laid wreaths
include the Speaker, State House of Assembly, Princess Chinwe Nwaebili; the
State Chief Judge, Justice Peter Umeadi; the Commander 302 Artillery Regiment
Onitsha, Colonel A.J. Fagge; Commanding Officer, Naval outpost Onitsha, Navy
Captain O.M. Oamen; Commissioner of Police, A.U Gwari represented by
Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP D.P. Yakadi; the Chairman Nigeria Legion,
Retired Major Gabriel Enyibuaku and representative of the State Traditional
Rulers Council, Igwe S.I. Okafor of Okpuno.
The ceremony also featured
firing of shots by the Military Burial Party and release of pigeons by Governor
Obi.
Governor Obi said that the
Nigerian Armies should be celebrated as they had contributed a lot towards
nation building as well as brave acts that had distinguished them in promoting
world peace through peace-keeping missions in troubled parts of the
world. He called on Nigerians to do more for the ex-servicemen and
their dependants to reward their sacrifice for the country.
The Governor had on arrival
inspected Guard of Honour mounted by the Nigerian Armed and Nigerian Legion.
