Anambra
state government yesterday started palliative work on the failed portion of
Umuokpu-Awka axis of the Enugu -Onitsha express way.
The government has equally ordered for immediate
commencement of palliative works on Tarzan Junction and Mgbemena axis of the
Onitsha -Owerri road.
The Commissioner for Works, Engineer Marcel Ifejiofor,
accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Emeka Ohuoha and other
directors in the Ministry inspected the Umuokpu Awka axis where massive work
was on going and later Onitsha axis.
Speaking at the site, Engineer Ifejiofor, said his
Ministry was responding to the directive from Governor Willie Obiano, who said
since the rains persisted, something should be done to alleviate the plight of
the road users.
Engineer Ifejiofor said that the work will be
concluded within forty-eight hours calling on road users to exercise patience
as government feels their pains and would not allow it to continue.
He called on the federal government to deploy
contractors to the road and other federal roads in the state which need urgent
intervention.
The Project Manager, Mr Tony Francis, said they were
mobilised by government to put the road back to use, promising to deliver on
schedule.
