Detectives attached to the Lagos State Police Command have
arrested a man, Mr Ayo Salau, for allegedly robbing and raping a lady he met on
social media.
However, the detectives are on the trail of the prime suspect, Mr. Richard Samuel Gbenga, who actually met the lady on Facebook and lured her. The lady’s journey to trouble started in July, when she became friends with Gbenga on Facebook. She, however, didn’t know that she was dealing with an armed robber and a rapist.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Chike
Oti, said the lady and the suspect interacted a couple of times before they
decided and agreed to meet each other. Oti said policemen from Maroko Police
Station arrested the suspect after he allegedly committed the crime. He said:
“On August 4, the suspect invited the young woman for a dinner and she
accepted. She further told him where they would meet before taking off for the
dinner. The suspect arrived at the agreed take off point in a Toyota Camry car
with registration number JJJ 406 DL, driven by Ayo Salau, a member of his
robbery gang. “On their way to Lekki, they suddenly pulled over at a lonely
spot and brought out cutlasses.
They ordered her to choose between taking off her clothes
and getting killed. The petrified lady took off her clothes. They then took
turn to rape her, after which she was robbed of her wristwatch and cash. The
moment the hoodlums left, the victim raised the alarm.
The policemen were alerted and the lady gave a vivid description
of the car. The police sent radio messages to different stations. The police
immediately laid ambush for the fleeing criminals. As soon as the police
sighted the suspects, they recognised them through the car.” When the policemen
flagged down the car, the suspects sensed they had been found out. They
abandoned their car and bolted. But the policemen pursued them and arrested
Salau, while his partner in crime, Gbenga, escaped. Oti said the suspect had
since been identified by the victim.
The suspect had also allegedly admitted to the crime. “Ayo
said that his fleeing partner recruited him for the job. The Lagos State
Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, has cautioned youths, especially
ladiese, to be aware of people, who might be using social media to take
advantage of them. We want to assure members of the public that the fleeing
suspect would soon be caught,” Oti said.
