Toddler crawls out of car crash, One dead, 6 injured in Awka

www.odogwublog.com reports that a 7 months toddler crawled out of the scene of a fatal accident around Government House axis of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.


The accident claimed the life of a middle aged woman and left six others injured before Government House Awka, Anambra state.
The accident which took place at about 5.30 pm Friday involved a commercial bus plying Perm Site route in Awka with registration number Awk 166 XX and a Toyota Camry car with registration number, FGG 28 LN.
Eye witness who did not want to be mentioned said they were surprised to see the baby crawling amidst tears while the nursing mother was unconscious but blamed the Government House commercial Bus for the accident. He said the Toyota Camry had slammed into the bus, causing it to somersault into a nearby gutter.


When Vanguard arrived the scene, food stuff and other commodities flung the entire road even as the victims have been reportedly rushed to hospital by men of the Federal Road Safety Corps.



Confirming the incident, the Sector Commander of the FRSC in Anambra State, Mr Sunday Ajayi said three of the injured persons were taken to a nearby hospital in Awka while three others in very critical condition were conveyed via an FRSC ambulance to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi.

He identified wrongful overtaking and over speeding as the major causes of the accident and appealed to motorists to exercise caution when plying on the state roads, emphasizing the need to place safety first above every other considerations.


Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it will sustain tempo of partnership with various schools, especially, primary and secondary in the State towards inculcating road safety principles in children.

The State Sector Commander, FRSC, Mr Sunday Ajayi stated this during a stakeholders meeting with Principals of Junior Secondary schools and Head Teachers of Primary schools, including Proprietors of all private primary and secondary schools in the state.

The meeting which was held at the Head of Service’s Hall, Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka was tagged “Youth Safety Education Stakeholders Forum”.
Mr Ajayi noted that average of thirteen persons were killed and no fewer than sixty-four others injured nationwide daily as a result of road crashes caused by reckless driving.
He reassured the determination of the command to promote zero tolerance for road crashes on highways and stressed the need for road users to have proper understanding of road signs.
In his remarks , state Commissioner for Basic Education, Prof. Kate Omenugha, represented by Director of Schools in the state, Mr Ray Offor stressed that the essence of the meeting was to educate school teachers and equip them with basic knowledge of road signs, as it is imperative for every teacher to understand road signs and other fundamental information about road usage.
On his part, the Commissioner for Road, Rail and Water Transportation, Mr Uche Okafor maintained that the state government is accelerating measures to transform and modernize transport systems to meet global standards.
Mr Okafor pointed out that the state government would not relent in its partnership with the FRSC in preventing incessant accidents, geared toward ensuring safety of lives and property.
The Chairman, Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, Nze Emeka Olisa commended FRSC for recognizing teachers and students as veritable tools to inculcate knowledge of road signs to road users.
