Mgbe community in Orlu local government area of Imo State has been
thrown into confusion following the gruesome murder of its traditional
ruler, Eze Brendan Ibekwe by yet to be identified person(s).
Eze
Brendan Ibekwe was found along the Orlu highway, few kilometres from
his Mgbe palace on Thursday, face down beside his motor bike, dead.
Sources said there was a deep cut on his head, while the assailants left with his royal bead wrist band and a phone.
A
villager who pleaded anonymity said Mgbe community is currently
enmeshed in a crises over who will represent the community as a
Councillor.
According to him, in time past,
when Mgbe community had a pressing need which required N300,000, the
then President-General, Mr John Ijeoma provided the money after
extracting a promise that he will be the Councillor.
However,
despite the agreement which was documented, another person, Mr Emeka
Okoronkwo also called Taribo demanded to take the slot, an action that
degenerated into altercations.
The source said Okoronkwo threatened to unleash mayhem if not presented as the community's Councillor, though elders intervened.
However, the All Progressive Congress (APC) primaries last week sparked off tension.
Eze
Brendan Ibekwe was said to have left his home to attend to an urgent
matter but his family was alerted by the alarm raised by people.
Already, his remains have been deposited at the morgue while the Police has begun a manhunt for his killers.
Meanwhile,
the Police Spokesman for Imo State, Andrew Enwerem has confirmed the
incident, adding that the Police is working hard to unravel the mystery
surrounding the Eze's death.
"Yes, am aware
that Eze Ibekwe is reportedly dead. The police has evacuated his body
while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation
Department (State CID) for thorough investigation as directed by the
State Commissioner of Police, CP Dasuki Galadinchi", Enwerem said.
