www.odogwublog.com reports that the Anambra State Government has
said it will commence the payment of its counterpart fund of the contributory
pension scheme to enable workers in the state civil service to enjoy the scheme
which had been in operation in the area since 2014.
Governor Willie Obiano who announced this while addressing
workers in the state on the occasion of this year's May Day at Doctor Alex
Ekwueme Square, Awka, noted that the committee looking into labour issues in
the state was fine tuning its report with a view to submitting it to the state
government for necessary action.
Represented by his Deputy, Doctor Nkem Okeke, Governor
Obiano disclosed that government had commenced the upward review of pension of
retirees as well as the shift duty and hazard allowances of Fire Service
personnel in the state.
Earlier in an address, the Chairman of Trade Union Congress,
TUC in the state, Comrade Ifeanyi Okechukwu urged government to depoliticize
the issue of minimum wage and ensure steady increase in workers’ salaries to
cater for the inflation in the country.
Also, the Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC in the
state, Comrade Jerry Nnubia charged the state government to be the first to
implement the new minimum wage expected to be approved by the Federal
Government soonest.
Comrade Nnubia also called for the scrapping of the contributory
pension scheme in the state and stoppage of further deductions from workers
salaries as no structure had been put in place to ensure its realization.
