The Chairman of the Panel, Igwe Peter Uyanwa of
Ukwulu, said the visit was to enable the panel gather first-hand information
relating to the fire incident and ascertain the extent of damage.
He explained that as part of its investigation, the
panel organized a public hearing at Ihiala Local Government Area, during which
nearly forty witnesses and victims testified.According to the Chairman, the aim
of holding the public hearing was to give a voice to those who have direct
experiences from the incident, as well people with expertise relating to the
mandate of the panel.
He added that members of the panel also examined
relics from the fire disaster which littered the Market environment and also
visited a victim of the fire disaster, Mrs Mgbokwa Ozochukwu at Our Lady of
Lourdes hospital, Ihiala as well as visited Markets in Ihiala to monitor
compliance with safety measures.
