Sickle
Cell Disorder has remained one of the most neglected health challenges
in Nigeria today, as Persons Living with the disorder are oftentimes
neglected by the Government, Discriminated, Dehumanized and stigmatized
by the Society.
It is gravely painful that we
are perceived weak, even when our Brain power towers above our peers. We
are denied job Opportunities and Sense of Belonging because of our
health status, a circumstance that we never created ourselves but out of
the ignorance of Our parents.
We are
subjected to Excruciating Crisis Pain, Various degree of Ulcers
especially that of the Legs, Organ failures (Kidney), Cardiac Arrest
(Acute Chest Syndrome), Early Stroke Condition (Paralysis), Nervous
breakdown, Poor vision Courtesy of Drug Adverse effects, Physically
Challenged (AVF) and sometimes in advanced aged memory loss.
Yet
We are not giving the Chance to live as the society expects us to die
at any moment, but we continue to strive and live beyond their
expectations.
Today a single Crisis Episode
Managed in a good Hospital can cost us on the average, a total sum of
N50k without drugs Given to you and sometimes this Crisis can occur more
than twice in Two months Once you find yourself in difficult and
Challenging Situations, especially when welfare, Emotional Trauma,
Discrimination and stigmatization are associated with the Sickle Cell
Person.
We don't need pity for our cause, we
need empathy, Sense of Belonging, and empowerment because we can fend
for ourselves, we are not Outrightly disabled and we are not Beggars
either.
We Only Pleading for our rights to be protected Through Sickle Cell Law.
We
also need employers to stop Discriminating or stigmatising us during
employment, we as well Pray that our mothers henceforth Should stop
being ashamed of us or abandoning us publicly at the mercy of the
insensitive society.
we will Continue to Cry to
the Government to have mercy on us and enact a law for us, Just like
prisoners (Criminals) who sometimes are giving State pardon, Likewise
Sicklers as innocent as they are, have served enough Lifetime Sentence
and Penance for their Parents Sake therefore More than any other person
deserve Mercy and freedom From the Societal Touture.
