www.odogwublog.com reports that Nigeria
Institute of Town Planning ( NITP) has blamed non implementation of
Umuahia Master Plan on lack of political will by the Abia State
Government.
The state
Chairman of NITP, Elder Nelson Nwosu who stated this during the 25th
anniversary of the institute in Umuahia expressed concern over
government's reluctance in driving the physical development policies of
the state.
He argued
that "physical planning is government activity", submitting that " it
can only be driven by government and not individuals".
Nwosu
further regretted that government often neglects inputs from Town
Planners in its choice of location for structural developments as well
as estates in the state.
He maintained that " until government funds the activities of town planners there is nothing much they could do on their own."
The
NITP boss further identified ignorance on the part of the public about
the importance of physical planning as another major challenge of the
sector.
He advised
developers against building structures without out the necessary
approvals as such structures are illegal with high risk.
Nwosu
also advised developers against cutting corners instead of paying the
necessary fees , insisting that any structure without government
approval is illegal and could be demolished any time without
compensation(s).
He
said Town Planners in the state had made quality contributions in the
formulation of physical development laws in the state, promising the
readiness of the members to ensure Umuahia capital city is developed
according to master plan.
