reports that Maria Goratti hostel, at Loretto Special Science Secondary School,
Adazi-Nnukwu, Anaocha Local Council Area, as well as belongings of boarders in
the hostel have been razed down by fire.
There was no life lost though the incident left the
occupants of the hostel in tears as all their belongings were gutted by the
inferno. Burnt property is estimated to be about fifteen million naira.
Narrating the incident, the Manager of Loretto Special
Science School, Reverend Father Hillary Nwajagu said they had a shout from the
hostel and rushed to the scene only to discover that the whole place has been
covered by fire when the students were having their final examinations in the
classes.
Reverend Father Nwajagu disclosed that the inferno was
from a charcoal iron which the students were using to iron their cloths. He disclosed
that they used fire extinguisher to put off the fire to stop further spread of
the fire even as he commended the prompt response by men of the state fire
service.
The Principal of the school, Mrs Nneka Enemuo opined
that it would be better to construct a separate building where students would
be ironing their cloths to avoid such incidents , and appealed to spirited
individuals to help in erecting another hostel for the students.
The Senior Prefect of the school, Miss Chidum Dunu,
while condoling with the students affected, appealed for government
intervention.
