www.odogwublog.com reports that the State
Government has signed a contract for control and reclamation works to commence
on two erosion sites with loans approved by the World Bank at Ugamuma, Obosi and Ikenga,
Ogidi.
Governor Willie Obiano signed the contract at the
Governor's Lodge Amawbia said that the addition of the two projects brings to
six, the total number of erosion challenges that the World Bank is assisting
the state to address where work has already commenced, while the remaining six
are at different stages of documentation.
The contractor handling the project has a maximum of
twenty-four months to complete and handover the project.
Speaking before signing the documents, Governor Obiano
emphasized that Anambra is bearing a legal obligation to the contract as the
money provided by World Bank is not a grant but a long-term loan taken at a
minimal interest rate.
He said the State Government will constantly oversight
the project to ensure that it is executed in line with best practices in
erosion control works, urging the contractor to keep to the terms of the
contract.
The Governor expressed appreciation to the World Bank
for already agreeing to intervene in twelve erosion sites in the state,
appealing for more interventions.
The Commissioner for Environment, Beautification and
Ecology, Dr Romanus Ejikeme said the event was a reality because the present
administration had followed its efforts at attracting the World Bank
interventions with credible evidences and has also shown transparency in
dealing with development partners.
The Project Coordinator, Mr. Michael Ifensor revealed
that the event consistent with the efforts of Governor Obiano is aimed at
achieving environmental sustainability in the state, noting that the contractor
had emerged from a credible bidding process overseen by the World Bank.
The Contractor handling the project, Mr. Frank Nnaji
assured that they will deploy every resource within their capacity to deliver
the Project in line with agreed terms.
In a vote of thanks, the Commissioner for Economic
Planning, Budget and Development Partners, Mr. Mark Okoye thanked World Bank
for supporting the state, saying the Ministry will follow through with the
documentation processes to make sure that the remaining six projects commence
in no distant time.
