Governor Nyersom Wike of Rivers State has brought relief to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Benue State with a donation of N200million to them.
Wike described as condemnable the wanton killing in Benue and other parts of the country, declaring that it was an indication that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration had failed in protecting Nigerians. The governor, who led top officials of Rivers State on a condolence visit to Governor Samuel Ortom and the people of Benue, bemoaned the situation where people were being massacred by Fulani herdsmen, sacked from their homes while security agencies look the other way.
He said that killers were known to the people in government.
Wike noted that Rivers and Benue shared several things in common and are people tagged as minorities when in the real sense they are not. He said that it was time the two states establish bonds of solidarity as a people who share a common destiny.
He said: “This is not the time for politics; this is time to condole with the people of Benue over what has happened to them. When I came in here, I drove to the tombs of the victims and I must tell you it was not a sight to behold. This is the time that every well-meaning Nigerian should identify with Benue even if you do not like them. Please, let’s put politics aside because to us Christians, life has more value and which explains why we are here to sympathize with our people of Benue State. The over 70 people killed, who knows what these people would have become in the future.’’
He charged Governor Ortom to return to his people as according to him, they were the only protection he can be guaranteed of, stressing that no power from above will remove him if he is fully connected with his people.
Governor Wike, who donated the sum of N200 million to the state government to enable it take care of the displaced persons, added that he would stand with the people of the state in in their trying time.
Ortom expressed gratitude to Wike over the show of solidarity and told him that the state was not safe because his people were still being killed and their lands occupied by the herdsmen.
He reiterated his call for the arrest of the leadership of Miyetti Allah Kauta Hore for onward prosecution as well as the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, over his bias posturing. He added that the IGP had become the mouth piece of the cattle breeders’ body.
