Cameroon in sports having pummeled her football team 4-0 in Uyo and 1-1
in Yaounde and in far away Tunisia, Nigeria’s D’ Tigers were again on
song as they took the Lions to the cleaners in the second quarterfinal
game of the ongoing AfroBasket 2017 defeating their opponents 106-91
points. They will now meet Senegal in semi-final
On a night Cameroon’s American import Beniot Mbala soared
an impressive double double 32 points 10 rebounds but it was not enough
to stop the Nigerian onslaught as Ikechukwu Nwamu scored 25 points with
Bryant Mbamalu pullng 22 and Akin Akindele 13 points.
Nigeria led 25-18, 27-25 in the first two quarters but fell 23-27 in the third quarter but bounced back in the last quarter 31-21 for a final score line of 106-91.
Nigeria coach, Alex Nwora admitted the calsh against
Cameroon was a tough one but remains glad his players rose from the
defeat to DR Congo in their last Group game to win a place in the semis.
“We’re taking each game as it comes. Tonight the players were wonderful
and understood that pride was at stake.
Morocco on Thursday became the first team to reach the FIBA AfroBasket 2017 Semi-Finals thanks to 66-62 victory over Egypt.
Although Morocco guard Ali Lahrich, who has been
sensational throughout the tournament, had a game to forget, head
coach Said El Bouzidi smartly called up veteran Zakaria El Masbahi to
lead proceeding.
The 37-year guard converted three of his five
three-pointers attempts to finish with a team-high 17 points, while
Egypt shooting guard Ibrahim El Gammal led all scorers with 22 points.
With the win, Morocco have reached the last four of the
competition for the first time since 1980 when they hosted and claimed a
Third-Place in the competition.
“This is a win for our people back home,” said Soufiane Kourodu few minutes after the historic win.
“We came to this tournament facing several adversities,
but our team spirit and desire to win allowed us to get the win,” he
said.
Meanwhile, Egypt forward Youssef Aboushousha paid tribute to Morocco.
“They were the better team today. We have played our very best, but they were able to make too many three-pointers.
Morocco will face the winner of the Tunisia vs DR Congo tie in Friday’s Semi-Finals.
