www.odogwublog.com reports that what looked like political banditry and thuggery ahead of the 2019 General elections, occurred in Enugu state over the weekend, between the supporters of the ruling party, Peoples Democratic Party[PDP] and the All Progressives Congress[APC], at Aguobu Owa, a rural community in Ezeagu council area of the state.
A traffic grid lock that kept commuters stranded for over three hours occurred at Eke Ozom market square, as both parties struggled to take over the market square for their own mini rally to welcome new members.
Sources said that the APC was the first party that indicated interest to use the market square on last Saturday for a mini rally to welcome, a multi millionaire business man from the community, Mr Kingsley Ubenyi, into their fold. But the PDP members equally mounted some canopies and hired loud speakers for thier own mini rally on the same market square. The scenario created by actions of both rival parties eventually turned chaotic,
Findings revealed that Dr. Ben Nwoye, the Enugu state chairman alongside other chieftains of the party, including the South East national Vice chairman, Emma Enukwu, turned up for the event to witness the cross over of the big shot,Mr Ubenyi into their party. But the adverse responses and opposing songs from the PDP supporters almost marred the event.
Speaking to newsmen thereafter, the Enugu state APC chairman, Dr. Nwoye, described the action as quite unfortunate . He said the action shows that PDP is jittery over activities APC in the state. He described PDP as dead and buried.
According to Nwoye, "PDP is finished, the party is now skeleton of itself what happened today, is nothing , but the action of a drowning party ,adding that no amount of such uncivilized act would deter APC from penetrating all the the nook and crannies of the state
He boasted that nothing would stop the APC from wrestling power from the PDP in the state come 2019, stressing that "we are seriously putting in place formidable structures in parts of the state.
In his own reaction, the APC National Vice chairman[South East],Chief Emma Enukwu, said thuggery and instigation of violence is old fashion way of fighting political opponent , advised those behind the act to better have a rethink , stating that APC remains a peaceful party, which do not believe in violence but in superior argument.
Some of the PDP members who spoke with public address system amidst the chaotic scenario created within the market environment boasted that Aguobu Owa community and the entire Ezeagu local government is a stronghold of PDP. Therefore, they must resist APC from establishing it's presence in the local government.
"What we are doing today is to tell APC that Ezeagu is a no go area, they should look elsewhere , we are for PDP"
When contacted, the chairman of Ezeagu caretaker committee, who is a stalwart of PDP, Comrade Chukwudi Ezinwa, said he was not involved in the ugly scenario. Even though that he is on leaf but he rushed to the area when he heard of the crisis lately. He said he wondered why the APC failed to obtain police permit that would have authorized them to hold the mini rally. He assured that as soon as he resume duty within the week, he will delve into the matter to avoid a repetition in future, stating Ezeagu council area is not known for any form of political violence.
