Ebonyi police arrest 2 over sale of baby for N100,000

ABAKALIKI—EBONYI State Police Command said it  arrested two suspects in connection with the sale of a new born baby in Port Harcourt, River State, for N100,000.

The suspects, Mrs. Perpetua Ukamaka Eze and Peace Oko were arrested by the police and were said to have made useful statements needed to track their accomplices. According to the Command’s PPRO, DSP George Okafor, who confirmed the arrest of two girls from Amaokwe village in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, the suspects connived and sold a new-born baby to child traffickers in Port Harcourt. Okafor said: “One Elem IfeanyiChukwu of Amangballa village reported that he got one of his girlfriends, Oko Chinasa from Amaokwe-Amangballa, pregnant and that on October 19, she told him that she wanted to see her grandmother at the same Amaokwe-Amangballa village.” 

He said the complainant did not know that there was a plan between the said Peace Oko and one Eze Ukamaka Perpetua of the same Amangballa village to go to Port Harcourt to meet one woman called Mummy B. According to Okafor, “the two of them left for Port Harcourt. It was at Mummy B’s place that Peace delivered a baby. 

“The girl sold the child on October 24 and returned to Afikpo.” DSP Okafor said on the receipt of the report, the police swung into action and arrested Peace and Perpetua. He said: “Both of them are making statements and we are investigating the matter. Mummy B’s address is not known by them for now. “At least, if they don’t know the name, they will be able to take the police to the place in Port Harcourt and we will see how the woman can be arrested and, possibly, the person the child was sold to. “For now, we are still investigating the matter and we will come up with a position soonest. “People must be careful that their children are left in the care of matured adults before they go for their business or whatever they do for a living.”
