Court dissolves marriage over husband’s inability to pay dowry

An Iseyin Grade C Customary Court on Tuesday dissolved a two-year-old marriage over husband’s inability to pay dowry.
The petitioner, Mrs Rafiat Amusa, had told the court that her husband, Waheed, refused to pay the dowry to her, a development she said forced her to pack out of her matrimonial home.
She said that the marriage was yet to produce any child
“We have been staying together since we got married in 2014, but he refused to pay the dowry to my parents.
“He promised, but could not fulfil it, I assume he is no longer interested, otherwise he would have paid the dowry to my parents.
“Since I moved out of the house, he had not for once looked for me , I hope my prayer for dissolution would be granted,” she said.
In his response, Waheed confirmed that he has not paid the said dowry, and attributed it to the present economic situation in the country.
“Things are not easy at all and she knows that; I have heard from reliable sources that she is `seeing’ someone already and that is why she is coming up with this excuse.
“I agree with her on the dissolution my lord, she is not a responsible woman,” he said.
In his judgment, President of the court, Chief Adelodun Oyegbenle, said it was unfortunate that families of the estranged couple also consented to the dissolution of the marriage.
He dissolved the union accordingly and warned both parties to maintain peace.
