BABY, MAN DIE AS TRAIN PASSENGERS CLASH WITH YOUTHS IN LAGOS

Tragedy struck on Friday night when some passengers riding on top the train, engaged residents of Agege in Lagos state, in a stone-hurling attack, causing the death of a baby and a man. According to eye witness who spoke to Odogwu Media on phone, the unlucky baby who was strapped to her mother's back died immediately one of the stones hurled by the passengers on top of the train hit her. When her mother realized that her baby had died, she collapsed  and was rushed to a hospital where she is still in a comma. Another casualty, a yet to be identified man who was rather busy hurling stones at passers-by and traders when he suddenly smashed his head on the pedestrian bridge at the railway station and died at the spot.

It was learned that dozens of miscreants, who could not pay to enter the train, usually hang on top of the moving train, which has since been described by the Nigerian Railway Corporation [NRC]as illegal. A trader said: They armed themselves with stones and bottles, especially at night . They hurl the stones and the bottles at passers-by," Tired of the incessant bad behaviour of the passengers, some youths in Agege mobilized and tried to fight back on Friday night, resulting in the double tragedy. A Hausa trader, Mallam Sanni Mohammed, said: That is what we see everyday, especially at night. In fact, when the train is approaching these days, everybody will be scampering for safety. Nobody wants the stones and the bottles to hit him. Some youths in Agege tried to put an end to this madness by fighting back. They engaged each side of the train in stone attack. One of the stones hit the baby and she died on the spot.
