www.odogwublog.com reports that the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria today issued 21 graduates from Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) College of Medicine with provisional licenses to practice as doctors.
They received the licenses at an induction/oath taking ceremony
held within the Main Auditorium of the ESUT College of Medicine,
Parklane Teaching Hospital Enugu.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chancellor of ESUT, Prof. Luke Okechukwu
Anike congratulated the 21 new doctors on their success in the just concluded 5th
MB professional examinations, saying the university and the college were proud
of their achievement.
Anike urged the doctors who are the fifth batch of graduates of ESUT
College of Medicine, to be good ambassadors of their alma mater and to always
bear in mind that their chosen profession, the medical professional, calls for
humility and service to humanity and not self aggrandizement.
“You must resist the urge to pursue material gains at the expense of
pursuit of higher education in medicine and humane care of your patients'.
“We expect all of you to specialize in various specialties and sub
specialties in Medicine to come into academics, research and get involved in
higher level of service to humanity'.
“You must appreciate your parents and/or guardians who toiled in no
small measure to see you through the medical school, being responsible for your
school fees and up keep. You must also appreciate your teachers in the medical
school, this being part of the oath, which you will soon be called to take.
Your teachers deserve your respect at all times, for without them, you will not
be here today,”
He equally charged the graduates to continue to pay allegiance to their
alma mater for the opportunity and platform it offered them in medical
training.
On the state of the College of Medicine, Prof. Anike recalled that when
he assumed office in ESUT and paid his first visit to the College, his mind was
agitated and disturbed at the level of decay of affairs in the institution.
“The condition of the College was to say the least, deplorable. I
immediately directed upon approval by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of
Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, that the College be closed temporarily,
so that the deplorable state of the College will be squarely addressed.
“We immediately swung into action and did a total renovation of the
College, especially the halls of residence. We also directed that academic
activities should be reviewed and strengthened and that the students must be
made to understand that they are in the medical school and must work very hard”
Anike said.
He boasted that the College has regained its lost glory and
marching on to greater heights, with academic activities, training and
examinations progressing as planned, under his administration..
He urged the students to work hard and take advantage of the determined
effort of the university and college authorities to move the College to greater
heights, adding that his administration has just bought a brand new 250KVA
sound proof generator set to power the entire College.
Prof. Anike said his administration was making effort to procure more
equipment for the laboratories and ESUT Teaching Hospital to beef up the
capacity of the College and Hospital to train medical doctors of world
standard.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the occasion and two-time Minister, John
Nnia Nwodo (Jnr) urged the new doctors not to take anything for granted and
always remain meticulous and exhaust all possibilities before they come to
diagnosis.
Nwodo who was Aviation Minister under the Shehu Shagari administration
and Information Minister under General Abdusalam Abubakar told the graduates
that they have just begun a journey to greater heights in the medical
profession, which requires persistent hard work, pointing out that first degree
in medical profession was no longer in vogue.
