Anambra community sets up reconciliation co'ttee amidst tension

Following the issuance of certificate of recognition to Dr. Emeka Onuorah as the new traditional ruler of Oraukwu community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra state, by the state government and its attendant war drum being chanted by some aggrieved persons in the area, the town union government, Oraukwu Congress has set up high-powered peace and reconciliation committee to reconcile all the aggrieved parties and restore peace in the area.

Governor Willie Obiano had on Thursday, July 28, issued a recognition certificate and staff of office to Dr. Onuorah an American based medical practitioner and Attorney-at-law, as the new Igwe of the community, amidst protests, discordant tunes and accusations by the aggrieved persons that the state government was trying to impose an Igwe on them.

Perturbed by the situation, the Oraukwu Congress at the weekend, set up the committee headed by Mr. Jide Okorji, a legal practitioner based in Onitsha and charged them to expedite action in bringing all the aggrieved parties into one umbrella and soothing their nerves.

President-General of Oraukwu Congress, Chief Cyril Ejidike, a senior lawyer who disclosed this during a half-year general meeting of Oraukwu Peoples Congress, OPC, said the committee membership is made up of one person from each of the eight villages in the area with a High Court judge, Justice Onochie Anyachebelu, an illustrious son of the area as a member and  driving force towards the reconciliation and peace restoration processes.

Flanked by other members of the town union executive committee, Ejidike noted that since the Igweship selection and election processes have been concluded and the state government recognized Dr. Onuorah with a chieftaincy certificate, the only option left was to reconcile all the aggrieved parties and then move the community forward.

Responding, the committee chairman, Okorji, pledged to accelerate all the peace and reconciliation processes to achieve optimum result within a shortest possible period, even as he acknowledged the fact that the assignment was going to be a herculean task and hard nuts to crack.

Reacting to the development, Igwe Onuorah commended the town union leadership for towing the part of peace, adding that on his part, he was ready to kneel down before all the aggrieved parties to win their soul so as to move on with their development projects which he identified in order of priority as completion of their on-going civic centre complex, electricity, erosion control, education and road network.

Flanked by his cabinet chiefs, Onuorah, said he had equally forgiven everyone who castigated him on his way to ascend the royal throne and urged all and sundry to sheath their sword and embrace the olive branch being dangled by the town union executive.

The monarch commended Governor Obiano for giving him the staff of office as the rightful winner of the throne and described the governor as the biblical wise Solomon who rather than cutting a baby into two to satisfy the two mothers laying claim to the baby, decided to give it to the rightful owner.
