www.odogwublog.com reports that Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education (AIFEC), Owerri, has been shut down today.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Mr Andrew Enwerem, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP has confirmed the arrest of six students.
Students this morning reacted to the school policy of no school fees no exams and took to the streets to protest, causing the indefinite closure of the schools.
Authorities of had issued an order directing students to pay up their fees, else they will not be allowed to write their examinations as against the former practice wherein students were allowed to write their examinations even without paying, but will pay up before they are issued their certificates.
The exams were billed to start the next week Monday, has been halted by the aggrieved students who barricaded the school main gates, demanding that the policy be changed.
The students had carried placards wherein they demanded that the hike fees including Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria be suspended. They also complained of lack of electricity supply for those living in the school hostels and that the 2015/2016 academic year financial budget of students Union Government be released among other things.
The teargas canister gave one student a deep cut, while 15 students said to be asthmatic patients are currently being hospitalized in an undisclosed hospital.
