The audit panel set up by the Enugu state government to conduct staff audit bio metric capturing exercise in the seventeen local government areas in the state,said they discovered a total of three thousand, nine hundred and sixteen (3,916) ghost workers in the state local government system.
The Speaker of the Enugu state house of assembly, Hon Edward Ubosi, who headed the panel made the disclosure as they presented their report to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuwanyi, yesterday.
By the virtue of the exercise, the state will be saving a total of One hundred and sixty one million, four hundred and ninety four thousand, five hundred and
seventy naira (N161, 494, 570) on monthly wage bill of local government staff in the 17 council areas of the state,Hon Ubosi stated.
According to Ubosi, the breakdown includes the
sum of sixty four million, eight hundred and eighty
two thousand, thirty three naira[N64,882,033], Ninety six million, six hundred
and twelve thousand, three hundred and thirty seven naira, twenty kobo
(N96, 612, 337.20) , from local government staff gross salaries
and teacher salaries respectively.
Governor Ugwuanyi commended the audit panel
for a job well done saying it will go a long way in helping the state
government in the on-going efforts to track down ghost workers in the
state public service.
The committee made a total of 26 recommendations for consideration by
the state government , which includes sacking of all local government staff found to have falsified their age, those in capacitated by
ill health, those employed contrary to the rule of civil service and
those found to be impersonators in the system.
It also recommended for more teachers be engaged in the primary
schools in the state.
The committee also suggested general posting of local government staff
after the bio metric capturing exercise as measure of enthroning discipline
in the local government system.
