The former national Chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh, has asked the Federal Government of Nigeria to as a matter of urgency disarm the Fulani Herdsmen who have been terrorizing people in the Middle Belt and Southern part of Nigeria.
Chief Umeh who is the APGA Senatorial candidate for the Anambra Central rerun also called on the President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the Minister of Agriculture to set up grazing reserves and ranches in Northern part of the country.
Umeh noted that during the first Republic every region in this country was known for one agricultural product or the other, saying that the South West was known for Cocoa, the East had palm trees that produced palm oil and kernel and the North groundnut and Cattle rearing.
He said that establishing grazing areas and ranches in other parts of the country was unacceptable as it would generate crisis among ethnic nationalities in the country and the Fulani Herdsmen and therefore setting up grazing areas and ranches should be restricted to the Northern part of the country.
Umeh who spoke weekend during the dedication of Archbishop C. J. Patterson International Auditorium Complex built by Bishop on the Niger Right Reverend Owen Nwokolo, said it was heart rendering the way Fulani Herdsmen kill people at will in Southern Nigeria without arrest.
He said the Fulani Herdsmen destroyed family/community farmlands without remorse and when there was resistance, they unleashed terror, pain which led to massacre, saying that it was bizarre the ease with which these Herdsmen carry AK-47 without confrontation or arrest by security operatives .
Querying the source of their licenses, Umeh said “it is unlawful to bear such riffles. Government has a lot to do. They should not put Nigerians to test by allowing these Herdsmen to carry riffles, which they use to kill and maim. They should disarm these Herdsmen”.
