Tension in Imo as herdsmen invade communities

There is palpable fear in Imo State as thousands of Fulani cattle herdsmen invaded two communities in the State, raising fear and tension.
The communities are Umukabia in Ngor Okpala and Umuedo in Ahiazu local government areas of Imo State.
Eze Uzoma Uchegbu, the Edo of Umuedo in Ahiazu local government confirmed the incident in a chat with The Authority Daily.
He said cattle herdsmen numbering over 1000 had last week Wednesday besieged their community at about 10pm, with their cattles numbering well over 2000.
According to him, the community was rattled by sounds of cattle and herdsmen who entered their community through a river, separating them from Ikeduru, saying the cattlemen were resisted by the people of Ogiri Ike but asked them to move on, an action that made them cross into Umuedo.
He explained that the herdsmen who carried pots and mats said they had come to settle at the Umuedo Community Primary School and threatened that if they were attacked by the villagers, they will return to revenge.
Eze Uchegbu who is a reader and lectures at the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education said youths and vigilante members resisted the cattle herdsmen peacefully and directed them to move on.
He said the cattles were saddled with heavy sacks suspected to be dangerous weapons.
According to him, there was no room for negotiation as his people were apprehensive of the cattle herdsmen adding that the Police were summoned to ensure peace and order.
In a related development, a youth leader Nguru Umuaro in Ngor Okpala, Cajetan Duke confirmed that cattle herdsmen were also resisted entry by youths in Umukabia in Ngor Okpala.
