A MURDERER who knifed his Gumtree flatmate to death after she snubbed
his pleas for sex was today jailed for life with a minimum of 17
years behind bars.
Twisted Gary Stevenson, 27, punched and throttled former cruise ship worker Katy Rourke, 25, then stabbed her in the heart following a booze binge in their shared apartment.
He later confessed he had "no moral boundaries left", adding: "If it wasn't her it would have been someone else."
Hospital lab assistant Stevenson admitted murdering Katy at the High Court in Glasgow last month.
There were sobs in court today in Edinburgh as sentencing judge Lady Rae said Stevenson "needlessly and brutally" killed Katy "because she rejected your sexual advances."
The judge said: "You were simply, on this occasion, not prepared to take no for an answer and you deliberately killed her." Social workers found he had "no empathy or remorse" for his victim, she added.
Before being jailed a bizarre statement from the killer was read in court in which he described himself as a "pressure cooker".
He said: "Katy did not deserve to die, she did nothing wrong, she had her whole life in front of her and I robbed her of that.
"I wish I would wake up and Katy was okay but it's not a dream, it's a wide awake living nightmare."
He added: "The truth is that there is no single reason, no simple explanation, but the way I would describe it was that I was a pressure cooker and the pressure had been building for a long, long time.
"Katy was just in the wrong place at the wrong time when I finally cracked, it was not her fault and I regret it so much every day.
"I deserve every second of the long, dark road which rises in front of me."
Stevenson told cops he had drunk half a bottle of Buckfast tonic wine then shared a bottle of vodka with Katy on the night of December 29.
He said they had consensual sex - but later when he woke her and pestered her for sex a second time she refused because she had to work the next day.
Katy, originally from Broughty Ferry near Dundee, had landed her dream job as a fashion buyer and moved into the flat in Govan, Glasgow, just two weeks before her death after finding it on the Gumtree website.
Raging Stevenson repeatedly punched her in the face and put his hands round her throat. As she screamed and fought back he grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed her three times.
He later told officers: ''I lost control. I didn't think about the consequence of my actions. Once it started it just took off.
“I started to hit her and I didn’t stop. I just kept going and going and going.
“She started fighting back. That’s when I took a knife from the kitchen and used it to make sure she stopped moving. That’s it.
“I’ve never been in trouble for violence. But when I did lose control, it felt like there was nothing to stop me. There were no moral boundaries left in my life.”
The monster left a scribbled note apologising to Katy's mum alongside an apparent suicide note asking for his remains to be cremated.
Stevenson shimmied down a drainpipe and fled to North Berwick. He was arrested the following day after he was rushed by ambulance to hospital claiming he had slashed his wrists.
As they drove him to the station he confessed: “I just want to tell the truth for the sake of the family.”
Prosecutors described Katy as a young woman ''with every expectation of a bright future ahead of her'', and said her parents and sisters had been devastated by her murder.
