The Imo State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has embarked on a peaceful protest for killings by Fulani Cattle herdsmen in Enugu and other areas in the South East geopolitical zone.
Bearing placards with different insciptions such as "call herdsmen to order, no to grazing bill, we reject islamization under any guise, we remain Christians" amongst others, the clergymen marched through Wethedral round to the Government House where they were addressed by the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Prince Eze Madumere.
Speaking on behalf of the Clergy, Bishop Stafford Nwaogu said the body was worried about the reckless killing of people in different parts of the South East and Nigeria saying the recent invasion in Nimbo, Uzo Uwani in Enugu State was allegedly perpetrated by some Fulani cattle herdsmen.
Bishop Nwaogu explained that the protests were going on simultaneously throughout the South East and reiterated CAN's rejection of the grazing routes and bill saying "this is against the cultural and customary land tenure policy of natives and people of each area."
He said CAN condemned in strong terms the nonchalant and complacent attitude of security agencies who had prior knowledge of the planned attack but did nothing to prevent the forewarned mayhem and massacres.
Prince Eze Madumere in his remarks commended the clergymen for their peaceful conduct and explained that South East Governors and other progressives were brainstorming to find a lasting solution just as he commended President Muhammadu Buhari for ordering clampdown on the rampaging herdsmen.
