Trailer crushes pregnant woman, her child in Lagos

It was wailing and lamentations at the weekend, when a container-trailer crushed a pregnant woman and her child to death at Suru Alaba in Lagos State.
The woman identified as a tailor by eyewitnesses, was said to be waiting to climb over the pavement to the other side of Mile 2 - Orile Expressway with her child, when tragedy befell them.
Eyewitnesses who spoke to The AUTHORITY on Sunday on condition of anonymity, said blood flew like fast moving river as their brain gushed out and the entire body smashed beyond recognition.
The trailer with registration number: LND364XC, was still parked at the scene of the accident with its tyres deflated, even as a Police patrol van was parked in front of it to keep hoodlums away and to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
A dealer in secondhand clothes who witnessed the accident that occurred about 8pm said, “up till now, I have not been able to eat because blood flew like river. What I saw yesterday, I have never seen it in my life. The woman was crossing the pavement with her child in her hand and she was pregnant.”
Meanwhile, when our correspondent called at Layemi-Alaba Police Head-quarters, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in-charge of the station was not on hand to confirm the incident, even as the officer on duty said the Police Act does not empower junior officers to make official comments.
However, eyewitnesses confirmed that the police and other members of the public assisted in removing the corpses and taking them to an undisclosed hospital.
In a telephone chat with the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Superintendent of Police (SP) Dolapo Badmos, she said, “I have confirmed the incident. The driver of the truck attempted to escape but was arrested. Investigation is still ongoing”.
