The Primate of All Nigeria (Anglican Communion), the Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh, has condemned the killings of innocent people by herdsmen in the country.
Okoh, who made the condemnation at the end of the 2016 `Way of the Cross' programme of the church at the Cathedral Church of Advent in Abuja, noted that the Federal Government’s major responsibility was to ensure the security and safety of citizens.
``It is the duty of the government to strategise and find solutions to this development, because if they fail to do so, then they will kill everybody and there will be no Nigeria tomorrow.
``Government must look into this because it is also another area of need, so that the ordinary woman, man and travellers can have safety on the roads, farm and their communities.
``The major responsibility of the government is the security of the people and with the present situation, Nigeria is not safe because they kill with impunity.
``I appeal to the authorities to save its citizens because if this thing continues unattended to, then the country is finished.’’
The primate also urged the government to create employment opportunities for Nigerian youths.
He gave assurance that the Anglican Communion would promote self-employment among youths of the church as much as possible.
``We are going to organise an economic empowerment programme for our youths; but it is a very small thing compared to the large population of unemployed youths we have in the country.
``We call on government to do more to see that the young ones are absorbed in something profitable for the country to have a future.
``While the church is trying to do something within the limits of its resources through medical centres, schools, security organisations, the government should also give its contribution towards that aspect,’’ he said.
Meanwhile, NAN recalls that President Muhammadu Buhari had ordered an investigation into the clashes between herdsmen and indigenes of communities in Benue State in central Nigeria.
A statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media, Malam Garba Shehu, said that Buhari expressed deep shock at the latest incident during the past week, which led to hundreds of deaths in four communities in Agatu, Benue State.
While ordering security agencies to get to the root causes of the problem, the president was quoted as saying, “We will conduct an investigation to know exactly what happened.
``The only way to bring an end to the violence once and for all is to look beyond one incident and ascertain exactly what factors are behind the conflicts.
“We are all one nation and one people. There should not be any reason why Nigerians of any group or tongue cannot now reside with one another wherever they find themselves after decades of living together.”
The statement said that the president further expressed condolences to the government and people of Benue State, particularly the people of the Agatu communities, assuring them that the government would do everything possible to ensure that no such incident ever occurred in their midst again.
“Once the investigations are concluded, we will act immediately to address the root of the problem,” The statement said.
