Anambra Central re-run: Labour Party Candidate sprouts surprises, gangs up against Umeh of APGA ---Says he is a candidate to beat
Should the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), insist only those candidates who contested the Anambra central election would re-contest, then the gang up against the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh would be a finality.
A meeting by concerned stakeholders summed up support for the candidate of the Labour Party in the Anambra Central Senatorial election, Chief Chuma Nwofor as their choice to ensure APGA did not go unopposed.
Chief Nwofor, a former Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, Anambra state, is rallying support from all other embattled candidates in the re-run of the Anambra Central Senatorial zone to ensure Chief Victor Umeh of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) did not go unopposed to the National Assembly.
Anambra state Chairman of Labour Party, Chief Jude Ezeanokwasa confirmed their preparation to win the re-run landslide if logistics did not hinder their alliances and planning. He said Nwofor contested with Ngige and Ekwunife as well as Umeh when Ekwunife was declared winner.
But when contacted , Nwofor said he was quiet to see the end of the drama before he takes action but now that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has came up with guidelines for the election, he is warning that the right things should be done.
He said he remains a candidate to beat in the election and Labour party from his calculations would defeat APGA.
Chief Nwofor contested Governorship election under the PDP, in 2007 and later in 2011 before angling for the Senate in the last election. He said he did not speak up since the intrigues were on to enable him see the stand of INEC and decide the legal options if the right thing was not done but said since INEC recognized that only those who contested the election earlier would re-contest, he has no problems with that.
The Labour Party Candidate insisted that although his party is waiting for the final INEC list, he is sure based on the INEC stand Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is out of the election as it is between the APGA candidate Chief Victor Umeh and Labour Party(LP) candidate as well as APC candidate Senator Chris Ngige, if he is still interested.
‘’I am ready for the election but if there is change not in line with the Electoral Act, I am ready to go to court. Remember, this is not a fresh election but a court ordered re-run, court cannot give you what you did not request.
‘’I have never considered anybody a threat and don’t see anybody a potential threat for this election. It is only me who has the capacity to win the election , having seen it all through crisscrossing of different parties and having served as President of Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture in the state.
Though, Dr. Obiora Okonkwo claimant to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket for Anambra Central Senatorial District is still asking for a total resolution of all the issues in contention to Anambra PDP and Central senatorial re-run election after it nullified Senator Uche Ekwunife’s mandate.
The Supreme Court had recognized the Ejike Oguebego-led executive committee of the PDP as the authentic leadership of the Anambra chapter of the party.
But in a statement, Okonkwo said the judgment did not finally resolve the issue of who among the contestants should be issued a Certificate of Return as the duly nominated candidate of the party.
