The popular Gunning Road, in Abakaliki, the main market for electronics in the state was yesterday gutted by a mysterious fire. Report says the fire destroyed a shop belonging to Ebonyi State Correspondent of National Light Newspapers, Mr Aaron Onorah and 15 others. That was the third fire incident in the state capital within the last three weeks.
The inferno destroyed goods worth millions of naira as both traders and sympathisers were seen in clusters discussing the matter.
The goods destroyed range from electrical appliances, generators, wares, electrical installations, among others.
Onorah, one of the victims, who lamented the level of destruction, noted that the incident took everybody by surprise as it burnt the affected shops sporadically. “Before I could realise what was happening and make effort to remove my goods, the fire burnt so fast that I couldn’t save anything. The goods in my shop are estimated at over six million naira”, he said.
Other traders affected by the fire lamented that the effort of the fire fighters did little or nothing to rescue the situation as the fire massively destroyed the goods belonging to traders.
Reacting, the Chairman of the State Emergence Management Agency, Evangelist Ephraim Onoye, explained that fire fighters did their best to salvage the situation, adding that the street lights put in place by the present administration assisted in curtailing the activities of looters during the ugly episode.
