Coalition urges VCs, rectors to emulate Oko Poly Mgt

Public Relations stunt to divert attention? Coalition of Civil Society Groups, (CCSG) has called on the leaderships of various institutions to emulate the achievement of the management of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State so as to grow the efficiency and accountability rate of good governance in Nigerian institutions.

The coalition at a press conference yesterday in Abuja said its unscheduled visit to the polytechnic, as part of its assessment tour of institutions in the last one year, revealed that its management led by Prof Godwin Onu has proved that Nigerian institutions can still achieve their mandates despite lean resources.

Speaking, the President of the coalition, Comrade Etuk Bassey William, said the management of the polytechnic has shown prudency with resources at its disposal with the level of achievements it had recorded in the last few years.

He said the independent assessment and evaluation of public office holders of the group is a normal routine to check the excesses of people in government so as to enhance transparency and accountability in government.

It said the visit was part of its mandate to ensure that quality and standard is guaranteed in the educational sector.

“Our visit to Oko is the sixth in the series of tours and it is our culture to address the press after each assessment tour as a way of encouraging those that are doing well and call those found wanting to order, because we are not here to praise-sing anybody or witch-hunt anybody.

“Our findings in Oko are heart-warming. It is not a story of condemnation but commendations because we discovered the administrative effectiveness in the internally generated Revenue (IGR) which has been judiciously used to build infrastructures in the institution.
He, therefore, went further to read out the list of achievements while urging the management of the polytechnic not to relent and to ensure that it consolidates on its achievements.
