Civil Society for Cancer Eradication in Nigeria, CiSCANEN Sensitizes Anambra Workers on Prostrate Cancer Prevention

www.odogwublog.com reports that as the world marks world Cancer day, more than 3,000 civil servants under the employ of the Anambra State government were yesterday enlightened on cancer management and prevention by the Anambra State Ministry of  Health in collaboration with an NGO, Civil Society for Cancer Eradication in Nigeria, CiSCANEN and the State Library Board.
The celebration which took place at the Hall of firm of the Anambra State Library Board witnessed large turnout of  civil servants, other NGOs, traditional rulers, students including the  Students of Midwifery, Adazi, School of Nursing Iyienu and the School of Nursing and Midwifery Nkpor.
In his address,  the State Coordinator of CiSCANEN, Mrs Gloria Nwafor said the aim of this year’s World Cancer Day, which has the theme, ‘We Can; I Can’ is to raise awareness and reawaken everybody’s comitement towards fighting the scourge of cancer.
She maintained that the vision of the Organization is to envision a cancer free Nigeria through coordination of over all effort in Civil society Organisation involved in the fight against cancer related mobidity and mortality in Nigeria through collaboration with relevant stakeholders and implementation of developmental projects and programmes that promote quality reproductive health care services and empowerment of Nigerian communities.
One of the resource persons at the event, Dr. Obiesie Emmanuel in his lecture entitled: ‘Prostrate Cancer’ noted that cancer of the prostrate is common among men of 40years and above while identifying its symptoms as terminal dripping, hesitancy, incomplete emptying, chronic urinary retention, straining among others.
He enjoined everyone, especially men to avoid too much alcohol intake, red meat and smoking but rather take enough fruits and vegetables.
On the topic: “Cervical cancer, Prevention and Management in the Developing World” State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joe Akabuike described cancer as an abnormal growth in the body that is caused by a virus called Human Papiloma virus (HPV), adding that low diet in fruits and vegetables, cigarette smoking, poor genital hygiene and first pregnancy in teenage are the risk factors of cancer ailment.
He also informed that cancer of the breast and cervix is more common among Nigerian women and that of prostate cancer among men of 40 years and above while advocating that getting back to natural diet, practicing safe sex, limiting the number of sexual partners and avoiding cigarette smoking can help prevent cancer in our environment.
Others who spoke at the event include adietician, mrs Ngozi Okoro, The Director Primary health and diseased control, Dr. Emmanuel Okafor among others.
