As the federal government continues to reassure Nigerians that the federal government has defeated the Boko Haram terrorists, the Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Adewale Martins has admonished President Muhammadu Buhari to tell Nigerians the true situation of the war.
The cleric who gave the admonition during his New Year message expressed concern over the continuous loss of lives of Nigerians in the hands of the terrorists, saying that the recent killing of over 61 Nigerians in multiple bomb blasts in Maiduguri and Adamawa State, were of concern to many Nigerians.
Martins urged the president not to give the citizens a false sense of assurance that all was well, when in reality there was still much to be done in securing the lives and properties of Nigerians, urging the Federal Government to urgently reappraise its strategies in the war against terror in the North East.
“I feel deeply pained by the recent multiple bomb blasts recorded in parts of Maiduguri and Adamawa State by members of the Boko Haram sect. It is very sad and unfortunate that over 60 innocent human lives perished in these dastardly attacks, especially at the thresh¬ hold of the New Year 2016.
“In view of this, it is obvi¬ous that the government needs to take more proactive steps in ensuring that these sect mem¬bers are completely decimat-ed and rendered incapable of causing more havoc in the land. While it is true that some suc¬cesses have been recorded by the nation’s security agencies in re¬cent times, it is also obvious that the war against terrorism is far from over.
“Indeed, it is necessary that our government, through the se¬curity agencies, confronts this truth squarely by engaging in more intelligence gathering and nipping such attacks in the bud, Martins said.
The Archbishop urged all Nigerians to be more security conscious in the New Year, ex¬horting them not to give in to despair, in view of the obvious economic challenges ahead. He also urged Nigerians to draw nearer to their creator, whom he said, would be able to make the nation great once again.
