Labour party demands for local government elections

Following the recent attempt by the members of the Anambra State House of Assembly to impeach the Speaker, Hon. Rita Maduagwu on allegation of planning to present before the House, a letter written by the State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, seeking for the extension of the tenure of the Local Government Chairmen and Councillors, the Labour party and other stakeholders in the state have  thrown their weight behind the lawmakers while urging the Governor to obey the rule of law by conducting the Local Government election.

The tenure of the Local Government Chairmen of the 21 Local Government areas in Anambra State expired in January 11, 2016 but the Governor, we learnt, is currently lobbying the leadership of the State Assembly to have their tenures extended for three months, a move that has created tension in the Hallowed chamber.

The Anambra State Chapter of Labour Party, in a press statement signed by its State Chairman, Chief Luke Ezeanokwasa mandated the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) led State Government in the state to immediately draw up a road map leading to the conduct of Local Government elections in the State to forestall break down of law and order.

Ezeanokwasa, however wondered why Governor Obiano, who he said benefited from the  laudable process of Local Government would be plotting to truncate democracy at the third tier of government in Anambra State.

He therefore debunked the allegation making round that Labour party is owned by an individual, saying that; “Labour Party is not controlled by any individual in Anambra state. The  Labour Party we have now in Anambra state is committed in running the party in line with internal party discipline towards  enthronement of transparent, free, fair and credible governorship primaries come 2017”

The statement also enjoined interested individuals who believes in the Labour Party principles and manifestoes to pick nomination form for the forthcoming Senatorial election in Anambra Central district for the re-run at the Party’s headquarters in Awka, adding that the party will soon start mobilising party faithful for aggressive electioneering campaign geared towards winning the re-run election in the zone.
