I am not in Nigeria to negotiate loans - IMF boss

The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Ms. Christine Lagarde, on Tuesday met with President Muhammadu Buhari in Aso Rock and afterwards refuted insinuations that she was in Nigeria to negotiate loans for the country.

Speaking to State House correspondents after her closed-door meeting with the President, Lagarde said instead, that her visit had to do with reviewing Nigeria's economy and its impact on neighbouring countries, which is one of the major functions of the IMF.

She explained that discussions with Buhari centred on the challenges arising from dwindling crude oil prices in the international market, as well other constraints.

Lagarde said a team of IMF economists would arrive Nigeria next week to follow up on her visit towards addressing the challenges that Nigeria could face.

Recalling her last visit to Nigeria four years ago, the IMF boss noted that many things have changed in the country since then, and in more complicated ways.
