Ex-Gov Orji awards Scholarship to 60 indigent students

The immediate past Governor of Abia State, and the Senator representing Abia Central district, Senator Theodore Orji, has awarded scholarships to 60 undergraduates in his district.
The beneficiaries are undergraduates drawn from the six Local Government Areas in the zone currently studying in various tertiary institutions in the country.
Handing over the letters of award to the beneficiaries at his constituency office in Umuahia, the Chairman of the Scholarship Committee, Chief Emma Nwabuko, said they were selected based on merit.
He explained that each of the six LGAs got 10 beneficiaries comprising five indigent students and five intelligent students.
Each of the beneficiaries was later issued with a cheque of N100,000 while the exercise, according to Nwabuko, is to be competed for annually to avoid laxity among beneficiaries.
Nwabuko who said the gesture was in demonstration of the ex-governor’s passion for youth empowerment through education, challenged the beneficiaries to take their studies seriously to reciprocate the gesture.
He noted that not many persons took the scheme seriously when it was initially announced, and thanked the beneficiaries for their academic excellence which he said was the basis for their selection.
Later in an interview with The AUTHORITY, some of the beneficiaries, Oguobi Ugochukwu, a 400 level Accountancy student of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike and Atulegwu Osinachi from Federal University of Technology, Owerri, expressed gratitude for the gesture and promised to work harder.
Similarly, Favour Emenike, also a 400 level Statistics student from FUTO thanked Senator Orji for giving succour to the poor, and prayed God to bless him. In the same vein, Munachiso Anyanwu, a second year Political Science student of the University of Uyo, said he had by the gesture, been spurred to work harder adding that he hopes to also give scholarship in future as a way of paying back to society.
